The only thing that could make him happy was to have his one love Daisy. Gatsby often threw parties just so that he could get a glimpse of Daisy and these parties were filled with his illegal alcohol which is why his parties were such a big hit. They can only tell Nick the stories that they had heard about Gatsby. The character of Jay Gatsby is a tragic one, whose tragic flaw is the belief that money can buy happiness, or buy back lost love. Neither proves true, and he dies alone and heartbroken. I see that as eerily similar to the crash in , when our nation built up so much wealth and prosperity, and thought itself to be happy, but found deep flaws in the social and economic structure of the nation when the prosperity suddenly collapsed into depression. After reading this book, knowing what we know as to what is about to come, it is unsurprising that the Great Depression would hit with such force. The abundance of wealth in this story is a little disgusting to read; the lavishness of the parties and the sprawling mansions.

I think the scene where Gatsby is throwing his shirts at Daisy and she starts crying is just hysterical. It is interesting how heavily Gatsby is criticized for being new money. It seems that either people were suspicious of how he came into his money so quickly and with such quantity, or that being new money was simply the only way to compromise the feelings of a rich man. Anyhow, I agree with the comment above about the shirt scene. Especially as it is depicted in the movie, just so absurdly overdone on behalf of Gatsby to try and win Daisy back. I disagree that Gatsby represents the true American Dream. The way I see it, Gatsby represents some perverted form of the Dream, because he has achieved success through illegal actions and deceit. The American Dream or at least the romanticized version I grew up hearing about is meant to be achieved through hard work and honesty, not cheating. Gatsby was on the right track at St Olaf, but he chose to drop out of school because he grew tired of working to pay for his educating. Bootlegging alcohol during the Prohibition made him rich, but it was immoral by his own standards, considering Gatsby himself never drank after seeing what alcohol did to Cody.
