I have been doing the job for ten years and am quite happy with my compensation. But I know it’s tough to get started and not everyone is cut out for the job. All that is to say, get into the law if you think you are suited for it and would enjoy it, not because you think it will get you the biggest paycheck. It worked out well for me, but there are a lot of unhappy lawyers who are saddled with tremendous debt and work that they hate.

That is easy to say but another thing entirely to. Our obligations flow from our rules of professional conduct, most of which we cannot ask a client to waive. All we can do is limit the scope of representation — generally called unbundling legal services. Unbundling can make a lot of sense for some things, but it is not a panacea for lowering the cost of legal services.
